SKANDAL!

During the colour revolution in Serbia in 2000, at 16, Milan helped different student organizations to bring about democratic changes in Serbia. In 2002, due to family circumstances, Milan had no choice than to return and adjust to his old/new poor, undeveloped and destroyed environment in Croatia. As a proactive person, he found a way to streamline his capacity and knowledge through engagement in local NGO Una and through number of activities and projects initiated there he decided to actively cope with the unprivileged return environment. His effort to reconcile people settled there after the war, people of different origin, nationality, religion and background, was later on supported by more influential and capable NGOs at that time and together they managed to win funding for many small projects in the community. With the help of those NGOs and UNHCR, he received numerous trainings and attended many very useful seminars in Croatia and abroad.

As a widely known activist in broader community, he was approached by SDSS, Serb minority party and was made candidate for the position of Deputy Mayor of the municipality. He won the election and helped to improve conditions for many socially excluded people, ethnic minorities, women victims of domestic violence, long term unemployed, elderly people and many others. He worked with almost all national NGOs, UNDP, UNHCR, many foreign embassies, partners from the government and the county to implement projects of great value for the Lika region and his home community. He was re-elected last year as a Serb minority representative in the role of Deputy Mayor again.

Four years ago, Milan started faculty schooling again, studying economics and attended several leadership programs including the IVLP program in the United States of America. Milan is also one of the founding members of VYRE network founded in Strasbourg, Council of Europe, founding and board member of Lika Local Action Group in Croatia and of a few NGOs. At the moment he is trying to improve his capacities and gain more knowledge and networking potential to deal with challenges on democracy and the rights of the minorities especially.
